Bezel Setting

Also called full bezel, half bezel, rub over setting

A bezel setting is a stone setting in which a thin collar of metal wraps around the edge of the gemstone and is pressed down over it. It is the most protective setting because the rim guards the girdle, the part of a stone most likely to chip.

In other words, the stone sits inside a metal ring that folds over its edge, like a frame holding a picture.

Full and partial bezels

A full bezel goes all the way around. A half or partial bezel covers two sides and leaves the others open, which lets more light in while keeping most of the protection.

Because the rim is unbroken metal, a bezel makes a stone read slightly larger than it is, and it gives a clean modern outline that suits plain bands.

The rendering problem

A bezel is a mirror curved around a mirror. The polished inner wall of the rim reflects the stone, and the stone reflects the rim back. Get the lighting wrong and the joint between metal and gem turns into a flat grey line, which kills the sense that there is a real stone in there.

The seam is the other detail to watch. On a real piece the metal is burnished tight to the stone with no gap. A render that shows daylight in that seam looks like a rendering error, not a design.

How the three metal versions read

Bezels show metal colour more than prongs do, simply because there is more metal touching the stone. A yellow gold bezel warms the stone at its edge, and a white gold bezel keeps the outline cool and neutral.

Since every file comes back in rose, white, and yellow gold, you can put all three side by side and pick which frame suits the stone before you cast anything.

Questions about Bezel Setting

Is a bezel setting more secure than prongs?

Yes. The rim covers the whole edge of the stone, so there are no prong tips to catch or bend.

Does a bezel make a diamond look smaller?

No, usually the opposite. The metal rim adds to the outline, so the stone reads a little larger from the top.
