A halo setting is a stone setting in which a circle of small stones surrounds the center stone. The ring of stones adds sparkle around the edge and makes the center stone read larger, which is why a halo is a common way to get presence from a smaller carat weight.
In other words, small stones form a border around the main stone, so the top of the ring looks wider than the center stone alone.
Why buyers choose it
A halo widens the visible outline. A center stone framed by a row of small stones covers noticeably more of the finger than the same stone set alone, at a fraction of what the extra carat weight would have cost.
There are variations worth naming on a listing, because customers search for them by name.

The rendering challenge
A halo puts two very different stone sizes next to each other, and they behave differently in light. The center stone throws broad flashes while the halo stones give fast small sparks. If the render lets the halo out-shine the center, the ring looks cheap even when the center stone is good.
The gap between the halo and the center stone is the second thing to get right. It should read as a fine dark line of shadow. Lose it and the whole top of the ring flattens into one bright disc.
