Cushion cut is a square or rectangular diamond cut with rounded corners and curved sides, named for its pillow like outline. Its facets are usually cut in a brilliant style, and the softer corners make it less prone to chipping than a princess.
A shape with real variation
Cushion is a broader label than most shape names. Cutters vary the facet pattern, the corner radius, and the length to width ratio, so two stones both sold as cushions can look noticeably different side by side.
The common split is between the chunky pattern, with fewer larger facets that throw big flashes, and the crushed ice pattern, with many small facets that give a busier scatter.

They are related. Old mine cuts are the antique forerunner of the modern cushion, with a smaller table, higher crown, and a visible culet.
