| Path | Total cost | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Photography | $4,840 | ~2 wk |
| Rendering | $300 | ~1 d |
At $15 per file, rendering beats the $242 it costs to photograph each SKU. Photography also carries about 3.0 reshoots in this estimate.
The defaults are starting points, not market rates. Real sample, photography, and reshoot costs vary by region, material, and studio. Replace every default with your own figures before you trust the comparison.

This calculator compares the real cost of physical samples and photography against 3D rendering for a collection. You enter the SKU count, the images and videos you need, and your own sample, shoot, and retouch rates.
It returns cost, time, and the break-even point side by side, using assumptions you can see and edit. Nothing here is presented as a universal market price.
The method, in plain sight
No black box. Here is exactly what the tool does with your answers.
You enter your real numbers
SKU count, images and videos per SKU, sample cost, photography rate, retouching, and an allowance for reshoots. Defaults are provided but every one is editable.
Two totals, built the same way
The photography path sums samples, shooting, retouching, and expected reshoots. The rendering path uses a flat per-file rate. Both show their working.
Cost, time, and break-even
You see total cost, rough timeline, the saving, and the SKU count at which rendering pulls ahead, so the comparison is about your catalogue, not a headline.

Is rendering really cheaper than photography?
For most jewelry catalogues, yes, because rendering skips the sample, the courier, and the reshoots. The calculator shows where the line sits for your specific numbers rather than claiming a fixed answer.
What does a render cost here?
Our flat rate is $15 per CAD file, which returns nine images and three videos in three golds. The calculator uses that as the rendering rate by default, and you can change it.
Does this include the cost of making samples?
Yes. Sample cost is one of the biggest hidden numbers in a photoshoot, so it is a field you can set. Rendering needs no physical sample, which is where most of the saving comes from.
